Lot 4793
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 17 mm, 2.14 g, 12 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Siscia, irregular mint, after 327. CONZHI-IHZ AVC Laureate head of Constantine I to right. Rev. [PR]OVIIN-TIN CAESS / •ASIS• (retrograde) Campgate with no doors and two turrets; above, star. Cf. RIC 200-3 (for possible prototype). Struck from somewhat worn dies, otherwise, good very fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

The style of this coin is clearly unofficial, indicating that it is a contemporary 'barbarous' imitation. The obverse legend is a blundered 'CONSTANTINVS AVG'. The reverse legend is a blundered 'PROVIDENTIAE CAESS'. The mint mark 'ASIS' is retrograde as are all the letters S in the legends.
